From the Xero 1099 report to an IRIS CSV file

Xero can e-file your 1099s through a paid partner, or export the 1099 report as a CSV file. With the export and the free IRIS Taxpayer Portal, you can file yourself. This page shows how to get the export into the IRIS template.

Before you export from Xero

Steps

  1. Run the 1099 report in Xero for tax year 2026 and review the boxes, moving or removing payments as needed.
  2. Export the 1099 forms as a CSV file.
  3. Open the IRIS CSV tool and drop the CSV into step 1. Pick 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC to match the forms in the file.
  4. Check the column matches in step 2. The tool matches columns by name, such as Contact, Tax ID Number, Address, City, Region and Postal Code. Fix any wrong match from the dropdowns. If the export has no payer columns, fill in your business once in the payer form.
  5. Fix what the check finds, such as long names, TINs without dashes, ZIPs that lost a leading zero or $0 amounts.
  6. Download the IRIS files, split at 250 records and 100KB, and upload them in the IRIS Taxpayer Portal under Upload CSV with Form Data.

If the export has the vendor details and the amounts in separate files, add the second file under "Combine two reports" in step 1. The tool joins them by name.

Why not upload the Xero export directly?

IRIS accepts only its own template: the exact header row for the form and tax year, TINs with dashes, 5- or 9-digit ZIPs, blank $0 amounts and at most 250 records per file. A file in any other layout is rejected. See why IRIS CSV uploads fail.
