IRIS CSV validator, fixer and 250-row splitter
Turn a QuickBooks, Excel or old FIRE file into IRS IRIS Taxpayer Portal CSV files that pass the upload checks. The tool fixes formatting errors, splits large files into batches of 250, and never sends your SSNs or EINs anywhere.
Combine two reports (QuickBooks contact list + 1099 totals)
QuickBooks Online has no single report with names, tax IDs, addresses and 1099 totals. Export the Vendor Contact List (with Tax ID and address columns) and the 1099 Contractor Summary, drop one above and the other here. Rows are joined by vendor name.
Match the exact header of your IRS template (recommended)
IRIS checks the header row word for word, and the IRS can change it each tax year. In the portal, open Upload CSV with Form Data, download the blank template for your form and tax year, and drop it here. The tool then writes your files under that exact header. It remembers the header row, never your data.

Why IRIS CSV uploads fail
The IRS turned off the FIRE system for information returns after 3 p.m. Eastern on November 19, 2026. Tax year 2026 forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC now go through IRIS. Small filers use the free IRIS Taxpayer Portal, which accepts a CSV upload built on an IRS template. That upload is strict:
- 250 records per file at most. A list of 1,000 contractors needs four files, each with the full IRS header row.
- Exact formats. EINs as XX-XXXXXXX and SSNs as XXX-XX-XXXX, ZIP codes without a dash, amounts without $ or commas, and every checkbox as Y or N.
- Short fields. Business names stop at 40 characters, first and last names at 20, and street addresses at 35.
- Limited characters. No periods or # signs in names and addresses, no apostrophes in person names, no hyphens in city names.
- No $0.00. Empty amounts must be blank, not zero.
One bad cell can make the portal reject the whole file. The tool above finds every one of these problems, fixes the ones that have a safe fix, and lists the rest so you can correct them in place.
What the tool fixes automatically
| Problem in your export | What IRIS needs | What the tool does |
|---|---|---|
| TIN 123456789 or 12 3456789 | XXX-XX-XXXX or XX-XXXXXXX | Adds the dashes and sets the TIN type |
| ZIP 7030 (Excel dropped the zero) | 07030 | Restores the leading zero and flags it |
| Amount $12,500.00 or 1.25E+04 | 12500.00 | Strips symbols and expands scientific notation |
| Amount 0.00 | Blank | Leaves the cell empty |
| Name over 40 characters | 40 characters | Moves the rest to name line 2 |
| Address over 35 characters | 35 characters | Abbreviates street words, moves the unit to line 2 |
| "José O'Brien Jr." in one Name column | First, last and suffix fields | Splits the name and removes accents and apostrophes |
| State "missouri" | MO | Converts state names to USPS codes |
| Empty 2nd TIN Notice box | Y or N | Fills N |
| 1,000 rows in one file | 250 rows and 100KB per file | Writes four or more files, each with the header |
| Tax ID shown as XXX-XX-1234 | The full TIN | Flags it and gives you a box to type the number |
| Names and amounts in two QuickBooks reports | One row per recipient | Joins the two exports by vendor name |
How to use it
- Pick the form and tax year, then drop your file. CSV, Excel and FIRE .txt files all work.
- Check that each IRIS field is matched to the right column. Enter your business details as the payer if your file does not have them.
- Review the errors and warnings. Type corrections into the boxes and recheck.
- Download the files and upload them one by one in IRIS under Upload CSV with Form Data.
Tip: download the blank template for your form and tax year from the IRIS portal and add it under "Match the exact header of your IRS template". The IRS checks the header row word for word.
