IRS name control generator

The IRS matches a 1099 to its records by the TIN and a four-character name control taken from the name. If your name line produces a different name control than the IRS has, the form fails name/TIN matching.

Runs only in this browser tab. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

The rules, from Publication 1220

EINs assigned online start with 20, 26, 27, 45, 46, 47, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85 or 86.

Using the name control in IRIS

IRIS CSV files have no name control column: IRIS works it out from the name you enter. That is why the name line matters. Put the person's legal name, not a nickname or a trade name, in the name fields, and use the name exactly as on the W-9. In a FIRE file, the name control was a field of its own in the B record, and the FIRE converter uses it to split names correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What is an IRS name control?
Up to four characters taken from the payee name, which the IRS uses with the TIN to match a form to its records.
What is the name control for an LLC?
It depends on how the LLC is taxed. A single-member LLC that is disregarded uses the owner's last name. An LLC taxed as a corporation or partnership uses the business name rules.
Does IRIS need the name control?
Not as a separate field. IRIS derives it from the name you enter, so the name must match the W-9.
