FIRE to IRIS converter: Publication 1220 file to IRIS CSV
FIRE takes its last returns on November 19, 2026. If your software still writes the old 750-character Publication 1220 file, drop it below. The tool reads the payer (A) and payee (B) records and writes IRIS Taxpayer Portal CSV files.
Combine two reports (QuickBooks contact list + 1099 totals)
QuickBooks Online has no single report with names, tax IDs, addresses and 1099 totals. Export the Vendor Contact List (with Tax ID and address columns) and the 1099 Contractor Summary, drop one above and the other here. Rows are joined by vendor name.
Match the exact header of your IRS template (recommended)
IRIS checks the header row word for word, and the IRS can change it each tax year. In the portal, open Upload CSV with Form Data, download the blank template for your form and tax year, and drop it here. The tool then writes your files under that exact header. It remembers the header row, never your data.

What gets converted
The converter reads Form 1099-NEC records (type of return NE) and Form 1099-MISC records (type of return A) from a Publication 1220 file. Each B record becomes one row in the IRIS CSV:
| FIRE field (Pub 1220 position) | IRIS CSV column |
|---|---|
| Payer TIN (A 12-20) | Payer Taxpayer ID Number, formatted XX-XXXXXXX |
| First and second payer name lines (A 53-132) | Payer Business or Entity Name Line 1 and 2 |
| Payer address, city, state, ZIP, phone (A 134-239) | Payer address columns |
| Type of TIN (B 11): 1 or 2 | Recipient TIN Type: EIN or SSN |
| Payee TIN (B 12-20) | Recipient Taxpayer ID Number with dashes |
| Account number, office code (B 21-44) | Form Account Number, Office Code |
| Payment amounts (B 55-270) | Box columns, by amount code, with cents restored |
| First payee name line (B 288-327) | Business name, or first, middle and last name for SSN payees |
| Payee address (B 368-498) | Recipient address columns |
| Second TIN notice, direct sales, FATCA (B 544-548) | Y/N checkbox columns |
| State and local tax withheld (B 723-746) | State 1 withheld columns |
| Combined federal/state code (B 747-748) | Combined Federal/State Filing column, as a state code |
Amount codes
For 1099-NEC, amount code 1 maps to Box 1 and code 4 to Box 4. For 1099-MISC, codes 1 to 6 map to Boxes 1 to 6, code 8 to Box 8, A to Box 9, C to Box 10, F to Box 11, D to Box 12 and E to Box 15.
Check these after converting
- Person names. FIRE holds a payee's name in one line. IRIS wants first and last names for people with an SSN. The tool uses the 4-letter name control to find the surname, then shows each split so you can confirm it.
- Payer TIN type. The FIRE A record does not say whether the payer TIN is an EIN or an SSN. The tool assumes EIN. If you file as a sole proprietor under your SSN, map the payer again or edit the rows.
- Corrections. The IRIS CSV template has no corrected-return column. File corrections through the portal's correction screens.
- Other forms. Records for other form types in the same file are counted and skipped.
