The $2,000 1099 threshold for 2026 payments

Public Law 119-21 raised the reporting threshold for most 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC payments from $600 to $2,000 for tax years beginning after 2025. Tax year 2026 forms, filed in early 2027, are the first ones affected.

Frequently asked questions

I paid a contractor $1,500 in 2026. Do I file a 1099-NEC?
Not required under the $2,000 threshold, unless you withheld federal income tax. You may still file one.
Does the $2,000 threshold apply to 2025 payments?
No. It applies to tax years beginning after 2025. Forms for 2025 payments, filed in early 2026, used $600.
Did the 1099-K threshold change too?
The 1099-K has its own rules, separate from 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC. See the IRS Instructions for Form 1099-K.
